First Product: Retractor Success in Bariatric Surgery
The company was founded in 1971 as Minnesota Scientific, Inc. by Bruce LeVahn in response to Dr. Kenneth Jensen, a cardiothoracic surgeon, who expressed a need for better exposure of the internal mammary artery (IMA). The association with Dr. Kenneth Jensen led to the development of the Poly-TractTM retractor system, the first of Minnesota Scientific's products. Because of the retractor's robust design, application to bariatric procedures quickly became apparent. By 1977, the Poly-Tract retractor system was becoming widely accepted as the system for gaining exposure during surgery on the morbidly obese patient.
Table-Mounted Retractor: Kidney Transplant Surgery
During the early eighties, Bruce LeVahn worked with Dr. Robert Anderson of Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota to develop the WISHBONETM table-mounted retractor system for kidney transplant surgery. This retractor was introduced in 1983 at the American College of Surgeons meeting and proved to be a great success. Through meeting Dr. Ronald Stoney, Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, the process of adapting the WISHBONE concept to abdominal vascular surgery was initiated.

Omni-Tract Surgical: International Presence
In 1983, Minnesota Scientific established its first European Representative in the Netherlands. During the following years, the company's international representation grew significantly and has continued to evolve since that time. At present, Omni-Tract Surgical is the established leader of table-mounted retractor systems and is represented by nearly thirty distributors in more than fifty countries.
By the late 1980s, Minnesota Scientific, Inc. was known worldwide as the Omni-Tract Retractor Company. The name "Omni-Tract", "Omni" meaning all and "Tract" referring to retraction, represents all directions of retraction for surgical exposure. In 1988, the name of the company was officially changed to Omni-Tract Surgical, a Division of Minnesota Scientific, Inc.
Over the years, the Omni-Tract Surgical retractor system has evolved into the current FastSystem retractor product line offering systems for various general, vascular and urological procedures and represents the state of the art for table-mounted retractor designs.
